KAILUA-KONA — Sunday’s Hookena Beach Road fire is considered suspicious, firefighters said, but was for the most part under control as of Monday.
The South Kona fire joins a growing number of about a dozen suspicious fires across West Hawaii in recent weeks. The fires have consumed anywhere from a few square yards to hundreds of acres.
The Hookena Beach Road fire is being monitored by the ranch that owns the property. The ranch also provided one of the two bulldozers that cut the firebreak.
The Lako Street fire, which started Thursday, continues to flare up and a night watch remains in place, according to the department.
Anyone with information about the recent fires should contact Hawaii Police Department Detective Levon Stevens at 326-4646, extension 275, or Levon.Stevens@hawaiicounty.gov.
Those who prefer anonymity can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300. All information is kept confidential and callers might be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
